A new world record was set in the American Masters Cup Water Ski-ing event, held at Calloway Gardens, Pine Moutian, in the southern state of Georgia on 14 July. Seventeen year-old Wayne Grimdotc, who already held the record for water-ski jumping at 169 feet, bettered his performance by a foot.
He did not, however, emerge as the overall men's champion for the event. This honour went to the defending world champion, Canadian George Athans, who finished second in the slalom third in jumping and fourth in tricks. A little-known skier, eighteen year-old Mark Crone, won the men's slalom championship in a run-off against Athans. During the two days of the competition he rounded 99 buoys.
On the women's side twenty-year old Maria Carrasco, a law student from Caracas, Venezuela, was an easy winner in the tricks division at Pine Mountain. Miss. Carrasco is the world champion, but was defeated as overall winner in this event by Liz Shetter, who finished as runner-up in the jumping and tricks and first in slalom. The master Cup championship was her third straight victory and eighth in nine years.
