  • Description

The Moscow State Circus is now playing to capacity audiences in New York, during a six-week engagement covering the Christmas season. The circus is not like others. Instead of the usual lion tamers and clowns covered in whipped-cream, the circus features acts which depend on muscular control and high precision.

Two of the acts featured in the New York performances are Oleg popov and the Irostan Riders. Popov is probably the world's best known clown. He performs without a mask or make-up -- his costume, a black velvet coat and checkered hat. He is not only a clown, but a mime, juggler, acrobat and rope walker. The Iriston Riders, dressed in traditional Cossack dress, specialise in precision drill and horsemanship.
