  • Description

EACH YEAR THE FINE ARTS SOCIETY OF MADRID PRESENTS THE BULLFIGHT IN THE STYLE AND COSTUME OF THE LAST CENTURY. CALLED "CORRIDA GOYESCA", THE COLOURFUL SPECTACLE THIS YEAR ATTRACTED A CROWD OF 25,000.

THE EVENT THIS YEAR FEATURED THE REVIVAL OF ONE OF BULLFIGHTING' D MOST DANGEROUS "TRICKS" -- SALTO DE LA GARROCHA, IN WHICH THE PICADOR POLE-VAULTS OVER A CHARGING BULL.

THE POLE-VAULTING SEQUENCE WENT OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT THIS YEAR, BUT THERE WAS ONE ANXIOUS MOMENT WHEN A PICADOR WAS KNOCKED FROM HIS HORSE AND GORED BY AN ENRAGED BULL.

CORRIDA GOYESCA IS PRIMARILY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF MADRID TO DRESS IN THE STYLISED CLOTHES OF COURTLY SPAIN. SOME SPECTATORS ARRIVE AT THE BULLRING IN HORSE-DRAWN, HIGHLY DECORATED CARRIAGES.

IT'S ALSO A RARE GLIMPSE AT THE VIOLENCE OF TRADITIONAL BULLRING TECHNIQUES -- MANY OF THE MOST DANGEROUS FEATURES OF CORRIDA GOYESCA HAVE BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM THE MODERN BULLRING REPERTOIRE.

BUT THE METHOD OF KILLING REMAINS UNCHANGED. THE SO-CALLED "MOMENT OF TRUTH" -- WHEN THE MATADOR FACES THE BULL FOR THE LAST TIME -- IS STILL THE HIGHSPOT OF ANY BULLRING DUEL.
