  • Description

On Saturday (9 November) Pope Paul attacked the theory that world food shortages were the result of overpopulation.

He was addressing delegates to the World Food Conference during a private audience at the Vatican.

The 77-year-old Pontiff laid the blame mainly on Governments which, he said, had encouraged industrial growth at the expense of agriculture.

He said it was inadmissible that those who controlled the wealth and resources of mankind should try to resolve the problem of hunger by forbidding the poor to be born.

And he claimed that an irrational and lop-sided scamping against demographic growth was being used as an alibi to divert attention from the main problem.

Observers noted much the same point was made by Chinese Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Hao Chun-Shih, in a speech to the conference two days ago.
