JIM REDMAN OF RHODESIA, WHO WON THE YEAR'S WORLD TITLE FOR THE 350 cc CLASS. REDMAN, RIDING A HONDA, WON THE TITLE UNDER THE POINTS SYSTEM, AND IT WAS HIS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN.

    THE JAPAN GRAND PRIX TOOK PLACE AT SUSUKA, ABOUT 250 MILES (400 KILOMETRES) WEST OF TOKYO. THE 25-YEAR-OLD HAILWOOD, HIMSELF A FORMER WORLD CHAMPION IN THE 350 cc CLASS, NEVER ALLOWED REDMAN TO COME CLOSER THAN ABOUT 330 YARDS (300 METRES) AFTER THE 12TH LAP, AND WON THE RACE BY A MARGIN OF ABOUT 800 YARDS (800 METRES).

    THERE WERE 11 STARTS IN THE RACES, WHICH WAS OVER 25 LAPS, OR NEARLY 80 MILES (125 KILOMETRES). HAILWOOD HAD AN AVERAGE WINNING SPEED OF ABOUT 90 MILES AN HOUR (142 KLMS AN HOUR), IN THE 14TH LAP, HE SET A NEW LAP RECORD.
