    Background: The New York Mets' seven-game winning streak was cut short on Wednesday (30 April) when the Chicago Cubs beat them 7-4 at Chicago's Wringley field.

    The Cubs head the National Baseball League's eastern table with a .688 winning average. The Mets are in second place, two and a half games behind.

    Pitching for the Cubs was Ray Burris who was newly named as a starting pitcher. His teammates gave him a comfortable five run edge in the first innings of Mets pitcher Jon Matlack who gave up two more runs before he was relieved in the fifth innings.
