  • Description

In Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday (August 22), the public was treated to a preview of the 44 cars which were to begin a rally on Monday (24 August) designed to find the cleanest, least air-polluting car.

The test, called the Clean Air Race, is a 3,600 mile (4,850 Km) run from Cambridge to Pasadena, California. Along the way the cars, each sponsored by a college or University in the United States or Canada, will be evaluated for speed, cleanliness of exhaust, noise, and overall performance.

The race competitors will be using five types of engine: steam, turbine, electric, electric hybrid and modified internal combustion. Fuels will include liquified propane gas, liquified natural gas and leaded and unleaded gasoline.

The National Air Pollution Control Administration, a government agency, is providing five thousand dollars in prizes in each category.
