  • Description

Visnews filmed June 2 at Pusan, South Korea, resumption of the trial against 25 Japanese fishermen, arrested by South Korean coast guards Jan 22 on charges of fishing inside the "Rhee (or peace) Line" claimed by President Syngman Rhee.

The small court room was packed by the defendants. After being charged, the fishermen were questioned by the prosecutor. Spokesmen for the Japanese, Madaka Dadaich, pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

Begun in March the trial was adjourned until May 28 because defendants' families wanted them represented by Japanese lawyers. Two Korea lawyers however, are defending the fishermen.

Some observers of the trial believe the fishermen victims of worsening relations between South Korea and Japan over repatriation of North Korean Refugees in Japan. The refugees opted to go to North Korea but South Korea wants them to be sent to their half of the country.

Meanwhile the fishermen went back to jail on remand until their case comes up again June 11.
