    Background: PARIS, FRANCE

A United States military attache, Lieutenant Colonel Charles ray, was shot dead in a Paris street on Monday (18 JANUARY). He had been walking from his apartment in the 16th district of the French capital, to his parked car when the lone killer walked up and shot him in the head with a pistol, police said. Colonel Ray, 43, was one of four assistant military attaches at the U.S. Embassy. A police spokesman said there were striking similarities between this attack and an attempt to kill the acting U.S. Ambassador, Mr. Christian Chapman, on November the 12th last year. Mr. Chapman had escaped unharmed after diving under his car outside his house when a lone gunman fired six shots at him form close range. Shortly after the shooting President Francis Mitterrand met United States Ambassador Evan Griffith Galbraith, who took up his post in Paris last month (DECEMBER). Reuters news agency said a little-known Lebanese group claimed responsibility for killing Colonel Ray.
