    M. JOSEPH KASAVUBU, THE CONGOLESE PRESIDENT, CAST HIS VOTE IN LEOPOLDVILLE IN THE CONGOLESE GENERAL?

  • Description

    M. JOSEPH KASAVUBU, THE CONGOLESE PRESIDENT, CAST HIS VOTE IN LEOPOLDVILLE IN THE CONGOLESE GENERAL ELECTIONS ON WEDNESDAY AS VOTERS THROUGHOUT THE CAPITAL WENT TO THE POLLS IN ORDERLY FASHION.

THIS WAS THE SECOND ATTEMPT TO HOLD THE CONGO'S STAGGERED ELECTIONS IN LEOPOLDVILLE. LAST MONTH, WHEN THE CAPITAL'S VOTERS ARRIVED AT THEIR POLLING STATIONS, THEY FOUND MOST OF THEM CLOSED BECAUSE ELECTION MATERIALS HAD NOT ARRIVED.

PRESIDENT KASAVUBU ARRIVED AT THE DENDALE POLLING STATION WITH GENERAL JOSEPH MOBUTU, COMMANDER OF THE CONGOLESE NATIONAL ARMY.

    M. KASAVUBU'S TRIBALLY-BASED ABAKO PARTY IS EXPECTED TO GAIN THE MAJORITY OF THE SEVEN CONTESTED SEATS IN THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES AND SIX IN THE SENATE.

THE BULK OF ABAKO SUPPORTERS, MEMBERS OF PRESIDENT KASAVUBU'S BAKONGO TRIBE, LIVE IN THE CAPITAL.

PRESIDENT KASAVUBU HEADS HIS PARTY LIST IN THE ELECTION, BUT THERE IS SOME CONJECTURE AS TO WHETHER HE COULD LEGALLY TAKE HIS SEAT IN THE HOUSE OF DEPUTIES IF ELECTED. RESULTS SO FAR IN THE ELECTIONS, WHICH BEGAN SIX WEEKS AGO IN KATANGA AND ARE TO END ON FRIDAY, SEEM TO POINT TO A VICTORY FOR M. TSHOMBE'S CONACO PARTY. FIGURES FROM THE FIRST FIVE PROVINCES TO DECLARE THEIR RESULTS LAST WEEK GAVE CONACO 27 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 37 SEATS IN THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES.
