Background: French student doctors demonstrated in Paris on March 15 against proposed changes in their training. The medical students who have been on strike for four weeks, marched through the city chanting and waving banners. The proposal are intended to bring the training of doctors in France into line with courses in other European countries. The students object to proposals that their specialty studies be chosen on the basis of exams after their sixth year of study, and to having to compete for places as interns after qualifying. They say the importance given to the sixth year same apparently devalues all previous stages. the students also object to the extension of their studies on minimal pay. At present it takes eight years to qualify as a doctor. Other reforms suggested for hospitals have prompted interns and consultants to declare they will strike on March 22 unless they receive replies to letters they have sent to government ministers.
