    The Kidnappers of the former Egyptian cabinet minister, Dr. Mohammad Hussein El Zahaby, demanded a place on Monday (4 July) to take them and their hostage to an unspecified destination. The kidnappers, from an extreme Moslem sect known as the Moslem society, snatched Dr. Zahaby from his home in the Helwan suburb of Cairo in the early hours of Sunday morning (3 July).

    SYNOPSIS: Dr. Zahaby, a former minister of the Religious Endowments, was a strong critic of the Moslem society--a banned religious group in Egypt. After his kidnap, a telephone caller said Dr. Zahaby was chosen as a victim, because of newspaper articles he'd written criticising the extremist society. The caller said the government was persecuting the Society.

    One of the two getaway cars, used by the kidnappers, was stopped by the kidnappers, was stopped by a crowd who were alerted by screams from Dr. Zahaby's family. The driver was caught, but another member of the gang hundred suspects, including all members of the sect previously released from prison.

    Meanwhile, a guard has been posted at Dr. Zahaby's house, while negotiations for his release continue. The kidnappers have promised to release him unharmed, if some of their demands are met. The kidnappers wanted 60 members of their sect freed from jail, and now Dr. Zahaby's son and other members of his family are waiting anxiously for further news.
