• Short Summary

The orthodox Gaullist, M. Christian Fouchet, formally announced his candidacy for the French Presidential election?

  • Description

The orthodox Gaullist, M. Christian Fouchet, formally announced his candidacy for the French Presidential election in Paris on Friday (5 April).

The 62 year old former minister and diplomat -- who is running as an independent candidate -- entered the Presidential race with a platform of fighting inflation and national and international crises.

    M. Fouchet has been critical of both President Pompidou and Prime Minister Pierre Messmer, and resigned from the Gaullist party (UDR) three years ago.

    M. Fouchet's allegiance to the Gaullist movement began in the early 1940's. In 1944, he was sent to Moscow by De Gaulle to negotiate the release of prisoners with the provisional Polish government. In 1947, M. Fouchet became a founding member of the political party set up by De Gaulle (R.P.F.).

    M. Fouchet entered the government of M. Pierre Mendes France in 1954. Over the years, he was Minister for Information and Education, and in 1967, became Home Secretary.

    M. Fouchet -- widely considered a "fringe" candidate -- said the new President should be chosen for his ethics and interest in the future of France.

A translation of part of M. Fouchet's statement follows.
