    THIRTY-SIX MILLION PEOPLE IN ITALY TODAY (SUNDAY) BEGAN VOTING IN A GENERAL ELECTION TO ELECT MEMBERS TO THE 613-SEAT CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES AND THE 315-SEAT SENATE.

    IT IS THE SIXTH GENERAL ELECTION IN ITALY SINCE WORLD WAR TWO, AND 7,366 CANDIDATES ARE CONTESTING THE AVAILABLE SEATS.

    REUTER SAYS THAT FEW ITALIANS DOUBT THAT THE CENTRE-LEFT COALITION WHICH HAS RULED FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS WILL BE DISLODGED.

    EIGHT PARTIES ARE TAKING PART IN THE CAMPAIGN. THE MAJORITY OF THE DIVISION HAS BEEN BETWEEN THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY, SENIOR PARTNERS IN THE COALITION WITH THE SOCIALISTS AND REPUBLICANS, AND THE COMMUNISTS, THE SECOND LARGEST POLITICAL PARTY IN ITALY.

    THE FINAL RESULTS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE KNOWN UNTIL TUESDAY EVENING. THE ELECTION IS BASED ON A COMPLICATED PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION SYSTEM, AND THE VOTING WILL BE TABULATED BY A COMPUTER.
