  • Description

At least 28 people died on Sunday (20 Dec) when fire swept through the upper storeys of the biggest hotel in Tucson, Arizona.

The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning and the hotel -- the Pioneer International -- was engulfed in flames within minutes. Fireman used ladders to rescues many guests from the fourth floor.

About 30 people were injured, seven of them seriously, and police feared the casualty toll might eventually rise to 40 when all victims were accounted for.

Casualties were taken to St. Mary's hospital where medical staff worked all night to tend to the injured. Fire authorities said the construction of the 40-year-old building might have been responsible for the blaze spreading so rapidly and tragically.
