  • Description

Students, most of whom attend Greek institutions, demonstrated in the streets of Famagusta, Cyprus on Monday (August 13), as a protest against the present political situation in the country. They carried banners and chanted slogans in favour of General Grivas and ENOSIS -- the movement for union with Greece.

After gathering in the town's main avenue, the demonstrators marched to a statue of one of their her???s of the original EOKA campaign against the British in the 1950's, Avexantiou, where a wreath was laid in his memory. The demonstration then continued through other parts of the town, and the only trouble occurred when the students clashed with a small number of the General's opponents. The police looked on without interfering, and the clash was seen over. The procession then returned to the status before finally dispersing.

During the weekend supporters of General Grivas had distributed leaflets denying Government allegations that the underground organisation, EOKA B, the successors of the original EOKA, intended to assassinate President Makarios and seize power through armed revelation.
