    PRESIDENT SARAGAT'S FIRST MESSAGE TO THE NATION THIS MORNING WAS GREETED BY THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE FROM MORE THAN 900 SENATORS AND DEPUTIES WHO HAD MET ALMOST TWICE DAILY FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS IN A MARATHON STRUGGLE TO FIND A NEW PRESIDENT.

    HE SPOKE OF THREE DUTIES OF THIS TIME -- DEFENCE OF PEACE, CONSOLIDATION OF FREE INSTITUTION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE. HE STRESSED THE NEED FOR CONTROLLED DISARMAMENT, INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING AND TOLERANCE, AND SAID EUROPEAN POLITICIAN AND ECONOMIC UNIFICATION WAS A POWERFUL FACTOR FOR PEACE.

    THE 66-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT DECLARED THAT THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC WAS BORN OF THE WARTIME RESISTANCE MOVEMENT, AND ENDED WITH THE CRY "VIVA L'ITALIA".

    SHOUTS OF "LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC" ECHOED THROUGH THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES AS THE ASSEMBLY CLOSED AND PRESIDENT SARAGAT LEFT TO DRIVE THROUGH BEFLAGGED STREETS TO HIS OFFICIAL RESIDENCE, THE QUIRINAL PALACE.

    SIGNOR SARAGAT, SOCIAL DEMOCRAT LEADER AND FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER IN SIGNOR MORO'S COALITION GOVERNMENT, WAS ELECTED FIFTH PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC LAST NIGHT, ON THE 21ST BALLOT OF A 13-DAY ELECTORAL BATTLE.

    FORMER PRESIDENT ANTONIO SEGNI, WHO RESIGNED ON DECEMBER 6, AFTER SUFFERING A STROKE IN AUGUST, WAS CHOSEN FOR A SEVEN-YEAR TERM ON THE NINTH BALLOT IN 1962.

    PRESIDENT SARAGAT IS A WIDOWER, AND HIS MARRIED DAUGHTER ERNESTINA IS EXPECTED TO ACT AS FIRST LADY.

    GREETED AT THE ASSEMBLY HALL THIS MORNING BY A 101-GUN SALUTE OVER ROME, THE NEW PRESIDENT LEFT TO DRIVE SLOWLY THROUGH CHEERING CROWDS, ESCORTED BY THE MOUNTED PRESIDENTIAL BODYGUARD.
