  • Description

A LARGE CROWD OF SOCIALISTS AND STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AGAINST THE VISIT TO JAPAN OF THE AMERICAN NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINE "SEADRAGON".

THEY WENT FIRST TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THEN MARCHED THROUGH TOKYO STREETS TO THE RESIDENCE OF THE NEW PRIME MINISTER, MR. SATO. THERE THEY SAT DOWN QUIETLY IN THE STREET. THEY CARRIED BANNERS CONDEMNING THE VISIT OF THE SUBMARINE, WHICH ARRIVED AT SASEBO TODAY.

JAPAN HAS BEEN ROCKED BY DEMONSTRATIONS -- MANY OF WHICH HAVE ENDED IN SCUFFLES WITH POLICE -- SINCE IT WAS ANNOUNCED THE "SEADRAGON" WAS TO MAKE A VISIT TO THE COUNTRY. IT IS THE FIRST TIME THAT A NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINE HAS BERTHED AT A JAPANESE PORT.

ORGANISERS OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS CLAIM THAT THE VISIT OF THE SUBMARINE MARKS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE INTRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS INTO JAPAN. THEY ALSO SAY THAT THE SUBMARINE -- AND ANY OTHERS WHICH MIGHT FOLLOW - PRESENTS A RADIOACTIVITY HEALTH HAZARD AND TURNS THE COUNTRY INTO A PROVOCATIVE TARGET.

(THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN TOKYO HAS REFUSED TO DISCLOSE WHETHER OR NOT THE SUBMARINE IS CARRYING NUCLEAR WEAPONS.)
