  • Description

DUBLIN HAS BEEN SPRUCED UP WITH DECORATIONS AND WILL STAGE A GREAT EASTER PARADE NEXT WEEKEND TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS SINCE THE FAMED EASTER REBELLION OF 1916. MANY OF THE PATRIOTS WHO TOOK PART IN THE BLOOD-DRENCHED REBELLION WILL BE ON HAND FOR THE COMMEMORATION.

BACK IN 1916 THE ORIGINAL PLAN WAS FOR A NATIONAL RISING AGAINST BRITISH RULE TIMED FOR EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 23, LED BY PROFESSOR EOIN MACNEILL'S IRISH VOLUNTEERS WHO HAD BEEN TRAINING AND DRILLING IN SECRET FOR MONTHS. BAD LUCK HIT THE REBELS AT SEVERAL POINTS. ONE OF THEIR LEADERS, SIR ROGER CASEMENT, WAS ARRESTED AS HE LANDED FROM A GERMAN SUBMARINE ON THE IRISH COAST. AN ACCOMPANYING VESSEL LADEN WITH ARMS AND AMMUNITION WAS SCUTTLED ON THE GOOD FRIDAY. ALTHOUGH MACNEILL CANCELLED ORDERS, DUBLIN DECIDED TO STAGE A RISING ON EASTER MONDAY.

PADRIC HENRY PEARSE, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE IRISH REPUBLICAN BROTHERHOOD AND A CONTINGENT OF 150 SEIZED THE GENERAL POST OFFICE AND MADE IT THEIR HEADQUARTERS. REBEL SNIPERS PERCHED ON ROOFTOPS AND CROUCHED BEHIND SANDBAGGED WINDOWS. WHEN FIGHTING BROKE OUT SOME 1,200 BRITISH TROOPS WERE DISPERSED IN BARRACKS RINGING THE CITY. BY THE FOLLOWING DAY THEIR STRENGTH HAS SWELLED TO 5,000.

A BRITISH GUNBOAT IN THE LIFFEY RIVER BOMBARDED LIBERTY HALL, FORMER HEADQUARTERS OF THE IRISH VOLUNTEERS. ITS HEAVY SHELLS BLASTED INTO RUBBLE, HALF OF O'CONNELL STREET, THE GPO AND OTHER BUILDINGS. FOR A WEEK DUBLIN WAS PARALYSED BY THE FIGHTING UNTIL FIRES AND BOMBARDMENT FORCED PEARSE AND HIS COLLEAGUES TO SURRENDER. THE REBELS CASUALTY LIST READ: 450 DEAD 2,614 WOUNDED. FIFTEEN OF THE LEADERS WERE HANGED. OTHERS LIKE PRESIDENT EAMON DE VALERA AND PRIME MINISTER SEAN LEMASS SURVIVED TO GUIDE THE NEW REPUBLIC THROUGH ITS FIRST HALF CENTURY OF INDEPENDENCE.

AS THE FAMOUS NELSON'S COLUMN, SYMBOL OF BRITISH RULE, WAS BLOWN UP LAST MONTH, DUBLIN WILL BE HEAVILY PROTECTED OVER EASTER WEEKEND TO SUPPRESS ANY MORE EXPLOSIVE GESTURES OF COMMEMORATION.
