  • Description

THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR GEORGE BROWN, HAD TALKS WITH MAYOR WILLY BRANDT OF WEST BERLIN IN A ONE-DAY VISIT TO THE DIVIDED CITY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY).

MR BROWN WENT TO WEST BERLIN ON THE LAST DAY OF HIS VISIT TO WEST GERMANY. HE MET HERR BRANDT AT THE RATHAUS SCHOENEBERG, THE CITY HALL. AFTER BRIEF TALKS, THE TWO MEN SIGNED THE "GOLDEN BOOK", IN WHICH DISTINGUISHED VISITORS TO WEST BERLIN RECORD THEIR VISITS.

MR BROWN ASSURED HERR BRANDT THAT BRITAIN WOULD FULFILL HER COMMITMENT TO MAINTAIN BERLIN AS A PLACE OF FREEDOM AND WHAT HE CALLED REAL DEMOCRACY.

EARLIER, THE BRITISH VISITOR HAD BEEN HOST TO HERR BRANDT AT THE SERGEANT'S MESS OF THE ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS. THE TWO MET ABOUT 100 BRITISH SERGEANTS, REPRESENTING ALL THE BRITISH ARMY UNITS IN WEST BERLIN.
