Ilie Nastase outclassed Edison Mandarino 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in the first match to give Rumania the lead. But Thomas Koch levelled the tie for Brazil with a hard earned 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 9-7 victory over Rumania's Ion Tiriac.
Brazil took a two-one lead in the contest on Sunday when Koch and Mandarino beat Nastase and Tiriac in the doubles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The two reserve singles matches will be played on Monday, and the winning country will meet defending cup-holders the United States in the Challenge round.

This match was harder fought one than the previous one, with the players duelling for 50 minutes in the fourth set before a decision was reached.
Finally its match-point, Tiriac serves and loses the point to give Koch a hard win for Brazil 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 9-7. Koch and Mandarino have since won a doubles to put Brazil tow-one up in the contest, with the reverse singles to play on Monday.
