    Brazil and Rumania each won one of the first two singles matches in the Davis Cup inter-zone final at Sao Paulo on Saturday.

    Ilie Nastase outclassed Edison Mandarino 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in the first match to give Rumania the lead. But Thomas Koch levelled the tie for Brazil with a hard earned 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 9-7 victory over Rumania's Ion Tiriac.

    Brazil took a two-one lead in the contest on Sunday when Koch and Mandarino beat Nastase and Tiriac in the doubles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

    The two reserve singles matches will be played on Monday, and the winning country will meet defending cup-holders the United States in the Challenge round.

    SYNOPSIS: In Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday, Brazil and Rumania each won one of the first two singles matches in the Davis Cup inter-zone final.

    Rumania Ilie Nastase serves to Edison Mandarino in the first match.

    Now Mandarino serves to Nastase. He wins this point, but he was outclassed throughout out the match by the Rumanian, who finally won 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

    The long-haired Brazilian Thomas Koch, serving, met Rumania's Ion Tiriac in the other singles match. The Rumanian wins this point.

    This match was harder fought one than the previous one, with the players duelling for 50 minutes in the fourth set before a decision was reached.

    Finally its match-point, Tiriac serves and loses the point to give Koch a hard win for Brazil 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 9-7. Koch and Mandarino have since won a doubles to put Brazil tow-one up in the contest, with the reverse singles to play on Monday.
