At 1600 hrs this afternoon some 400 members of three of Israel's Labour Parties (Mapai, Rafi & Ahdut Ha'avodah) met at Beth Elisheva in Jerusalem for the official signing of the scroll, proclaiming the unification into the party "The Israel Labour Party".
At 1600 hrs this afternoon some 400 members of three of Israel's Labour Parties (Mapai, Rafi & Ahdut Ha'avodah) met at Beth Elisheva in Jerusalem for the official signing of the scroll, proclaiming the unification into the party "The Israel Labour Party". The fourth Labour party in Israel's Parliament "Mapam" (furthest left) is expected to join the united party in the near future. Mrs. Golda Meir, Secretary General of Mapai opened the proceedings and invited the speakers of the various secretariats of the parties to address the meeting after which the foundation-statues were read. The statues where then signed by the secretaries of the former parties and then according to the ABC by delegates along the tables. In the evening the official unification meeting took place in the House of the Nation (Binyane Ha'umah) in Jerusalem in the presence of the President, Mr. Salman Shazer. The 2500 delegates at this meeting were addressed by Prime Minister Eshkol (Mapai), Mr. Peres (Rafi) & Mr. Galili (Ahdut Ha'avodah). Speaking for the invited guests, representatives of the socialist parties of Belgium, Denmark, France, U.K., Norway, Malagasy, Finland, West Germany, Singapore, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Mauritius and Holland, spoke Mr. Bruno Pittermann, President of the Socialist Intl. On the dais were 1-4 Mr. Halkerupp, Chairman of the Youth Intl., Mr. Israel Galili, Minister of Inform and former Sec. Gen. of Ahdut Ha'avodah party, P.M. Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir, Mr. Shimon Peres, former Sec. Gen. of Rafi, Mr. Pittermann and Mr. Ish-Shalom, acting Mayor of Jerusalem in the absence abroad of Mr. Kollek. The Israeli speakers underlined the future aims of the united party whilst Mr. Pittermann congratulated the new party on the unification and assured Labour in Israel of the unfledging support for Israels aims: The right of existence and peace by direct negotiations, free passage through the Suez Canal and the Golf of Eilat.
