    In Rhodesia, the largest crowd ever seen at a political rally - more than 200,000 people, turned out on Sunday (19 March) to welcome home the Rhodesian Nationalist leader, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, from his visit to London and New York.

    SYNOPSIS: It was a joyful crowd that met Bishop Muzorewa's plane. United African National Council officials had organised buses, cars and trains to being blacks from all over the country to the rally. The officials claimed 800,000 people were there, but local and foreign correspondents estimated the crowd to be about a quarter of a million.

    Bishop Muzorewa was greeted by roars of approval, a soaring chorus of freedom songs and a sea of raised fists symbolising black power.

    The bishop[ said the meeting demonstrated to the United Nations Security Council, which he had been refused permission to address, that the Rhodesian internal settlement agreement was accepted and supported by the masses of 'Zimbabwe'.

    Referring to the guerilla fighters, he said, "The boys and girls in the bush will soon be with us and in the meantime I greet you on their behalf". The bishop said in a matter of days he would be calling on the guerillas to come home, a free and heroic people.

    Bishop Muzorewa, said the Salisbury agreement, by providing for one-man-one-vote elections for Rhodesia's 6.8 million blacks and quarter of a million whites, removed the causes of the five-year-old guerilla was that has claimed nearly 10,000 lives.

    Amidst the celebration the Bishop told the crowd to fight for peace and stability, democracy and integrity. He said Zimbabweans must show the world that they are ready to rule themselves.
