Background: SIX-DAY CYCLE RACING YESTERDAY (MONDAY) RESUMED IN AMSTERDAM, THE DUTCH CAPITAL, AFTER A 30-YEAR BREAK. EIGHTEEN COMPETITORS FROM FOUR WEST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART.

THE CONTEST, STAGED IN THE EUROPA HALL, IS THE TENTH IN THIS YEAR'S SIX-DAY CYCLE RACING CALENDAR IN WEST EUROPE.

SIX-DAY RACES NO LONGER ARE THE SIX-DAY ORDEAL THEY WERE IN THE PIONEER DAYS OF THE SPORT. NOWADAYS, COMPETITORS MUST TAKE A FOUR-HOUR BREAK FOR EVERY EIGHT ON THE TRACK. THIS GIVES SPECTATORS A BREAK TOO.

AMONG COMPETITORS ARE PALLE LYKKE AND FRED EUGEN ON DENMARK; PATRICK SERCU OF BELGIUM, THE EX-WORLD AMATEUR SPRINT CHAMPION AND OLYMPIC MEDALLIST; JAN JANSSEN OF HOLLAND; GERARD KOEL OF WEST GERMANY; EMILE SEVEREYNS OF BELGIUM; JAN OUDKERK OF HOLLAND AND ROMAN DELOOF OF BELGIUM, BOTH EX-WORLD MOTOR-PACED CHAMPIONS.
