SYNOPSIS: There was a solemn ceremony at Amman Airport on Sunday. King Hussein of Jordan arrived on the tarmac to await the aircraft bringing home the body of his father and former King of Jordan, Tallal Ibn Abdallah. The former monarch died in hospital in Istanbul on Saturday. King Hussein, flanked by his brothers, Crown Prince Hassan and Prince Mohammed, appeared deeply moved as the body of his 61-year old father was brought down from the aircraft.
The funeral procession left the airport for the Raghdan Palace. King Tallal ruled Jordan for less than a year after his father, King Abdallah, was assassinated in a Jerusalem mosque nearly 20 years ago.
Often described as the "lonely Prince", Tallal was dethroned at the age of 40 after developing severe schizophrenia. By 1951, his condition became serious enough for him to be sent to Switzerland for medical treatment. Eight years later the Jordanian Parliament voted his abdication and the accession of his son Hussein.
After lying inside the Palace, the coffin was moved to a nearby mosque. King Tallal is also survived by his wife, Queen Mother Zein whom he married in 1933.
Following the ceremony in the mosque, King Tallal was buried in the Royal cemetery.
