    Austria's Hans Hinterseer skied to victory in the World Cup Men's Giant Slalom at Val D'Isere in France on Saturday (December 8).

    Hinterseer covered the 430 metre (470 yard) slope through 63 gates in just under one minute 32 and a half seconds. He edged Italy's Helmut Schmalzl into second place by a fraction of a second.

    Hinterseer was placed third after the initial leg of the championship the previous day. But he took his winning run late on Saturday when the run was slightly faster.

    The favourite Italian Piero Gros, who came third, took his final run in thick snow earlier int he day. He said the pressure of being favourite had worried him. The Italians were also missing their reigning World Cup holder, Gustavo Thoeni, who feel during the first leg of the vent.

    Another Austrian skier, Edmund Bruggmann, who'd been away from the slopes for a year because of an injury, took fifth place.
