TRANSCRIPT: "The giant dome has taken its place as part of the New Orleans skyline now, and would appear to be ready to go for Sunday's open house. On the outside that is... Inside, workmen are fighting a losing battle against the clock, and the Stadium Commission says it's assuming partial occupancy for the time being. What that means to the average football fan is simple that there will be seats available, and a football field, and a roof.



And even the promised giant television screens. But the TV screens may or may not be operating, since CBS has not yet given the necessary permission for games simocasts or instant replays. The completed portions of the stadium on the other hand, are lavish. A combination of art deco Roman coliseum and Houston East....all packed inside an enormous building which could literally hold the Astrodome inside.



The box suites -- some of which drew bids of nearly fifty thousand dollars for a year's occupancy -- are still in varying stages of readiness and will come complete with private games seating. More average customers will also have theatre seats set in a kaleidoscope of colours. The design is aimed at avoiding that an awful empty look stadiums have when TV cameras pan ??? But then, with a price tag approaching nearly two hundred million dollars, stadium officials hope that particular concept won't be put to the test."

Background: A giant superdome, once dubbed the greatest building in the history of man, will open in New Orleans on Sunday (3 August). There will be seating for 80,000 football fans.

The cost for this cathedral to sport is near two hundred million U.S. dollars (75 million sterling). It has a gigantic roof span of 680 feet (207 metres) and is far superior in size to the Houston Astrodome. The State Governor of Louisiana said it would be the greatest building ever when the scheme started in 1966.

The stadium will not be exclusively for football. The arcana can be made smaller for basketball and switched around again for baseball. The spectators will be able to watch their sport in comparatively luxurious conditions, with the seating resembling theatre seats. For the wealthy, there are box suites....private rooms with seating which will be sold with one year leases. They are going for up to 50,000 U.S. dollars (22,000 sterling).

The opening of the superdome is going ahead as planned in spite of the fact that much of the interior remains unfinished.

One special feature is a giant television screen which will give instant replays to the spectators.
