  • Description

THE LEADER OF THE FRENCH CENTRE DEMOCRAT PARTY, A RIGHT-OF-CENTRE GROUP, SENATOR JEAN LECANUET, ANNOUNCED IN PARIS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) THAT IT WAS UNLIKELY THAT HE WOULD STAND AS A CANDIDATE IN THE MARCH GENERAL ELECTIONS. HE SAID HE WOULD NOT STAND FOR RE-ELECTION IN HIS PRESENT CONSTITUENCY, ROUEN, AND WOULD ONLY STAND IN ANOTHER CONSTITUENCY IF IT WERE PROVEN THAT IT WAS INDISPENSIBLE FOR HIM TO REMAIN A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

SENATOR LECANUET HOPES HIS PARTY WILL WIN ENOUGH SEATS IN THE NEXT ASSEMBLY TO FORM A MAJORITY GOVERNMENT WITH THE GAULLISTS AND THUS OBLIGE PRESIDENT DE GAULLE TO BE; MORE CONCILIATORY TOWARDS THE UNITED STATES AND MORE ENTHUISIASTIC ABOUT THE UNION OF EUROPE. THE SENATOR BECAME A NATIONAL FIGURE DURING THE 1965 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, BUT HIS LATEST MOVE IS SEEN AS WEAKENING HIS OWN PRESTIGE AS LEADER OF THE CENTRE DEMOCRATS.
