THE SPECIALS ARE A FORCE OF 8,000 PROTESTANT PART-TIME POLICEMEN WHO WERE YESTERDAY ORDERED TO TURN IN THEIR GUNS BY BRITAIN'S SECURITY CHIEF IN ULSTER.

MR. PAISLEY TOLD HIS SUPPORTERS TODAY (23 AUGUST) TO TRAVEL INDIVIDUALLY TO STORMONT CASTLE, SEAT OF THE PROVINCE'S GOVERNMENT, AFTER A LAST-MINUTE BAN ON A MOTORCADE HE HAD ORGANISED. NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED AS THE PROTESTANTS MASSED OUTSIDE THE CASTLE. MR. PAISLEY AND SIX OF HIS SUPPORTERS WENT INSIDE FOR A 75-MINUTE MEETING WITH NORTHERN IRELAND'S MINISTER FOR EDUCATION.

EARLIER MR. PAISLEY DENOUNCED THE BAN ON THE MOTORCADE AS MILITARY DICTATORSHIP.
