Background: President Anwar Sadat of the United Arab Republic said in Cairo last night, 8th January, that Egypt must depend upon its own power in any battle with Israel.
President Sadat was addressing University professors and leading Arab educationists at Cairo University.
In his address, President Sadat charged the United States with obstructing efforts for a peaceful settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Washington's all-out support of Israel, he said, was aimed at turning the cease-fire into permanent occupation of Arab lands. President Sadat reiterated that Cairo would reject any extension of the cease-fire without effective steps for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from occupied territories.
