  • Description

Bolivian President General Hugo Banzer arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday (26 November) to resume talks with Argentine leaders on his land-locked country's claim for a right of way to Pacific Ocean.

SYNOPSIS: President Banzer and his party were greeted by Argentine President General Jorge Videla and members of the Argentine diplomatic corps.

Also on hand for the arrival were two other members of Argentina's ruling military junta -- Admiral Eduardo Massera and Brigadier Orlando Agosti.

An outlet to the sea has been Bolivia's aspiration since the 1879 war of the Pacific when the country lost the Pacific province of Antofagasta to the conquering Chilean army. In February 1975, Bolivia and Chile began discussions on the possibility of Bolivian access to the sea. Now talks between Argentina and Bolvia have taken a more definite form. It's believed Bolivian gas and iron ore will play vital roles in the discussions.

During his three day stay, President Banzer will examine proposals for exploitation of "El Mutun"--a Bolivian iron ore field believed to be one of the richest in the world.
