  • Description

CROWDS OF AFRICANS BEGAN TO ASSEMBLE AT NAIROBI AIRPORT FROM DAWN, APRIL 8, TO GREET THEIR LEADERS RETURNING FROM THE LONDON CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE, WERE AFTER SIX WEEKS IN SESSION A COMPROMISE CONSTITUTIONAL WAS ACCEPTED BY THE TWO MAIN RIVAL AFRICAN PARTIES. BEFORE LEAVING LONDON BOTH THE KENYA AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC UNION AND THE KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION ASSURED COLONIAL SECRETARY MAUDLING THAT THEY WOULD FROM A COALITION GOVERNMENT AND WORK TOGETHER ON THE FINAL STAGES OF COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE.

FIRST TO ARRIVE WERE THE KADU LEADERS, WHO WERE WATCHED IN STOLID SILENCE BY SEVERAL THOUSAND KANU SUPPORTERS. NAIROBI BEING A KANU STRONGHOLD ONLY ABOUT FIVE HUNDRED KADU FOLLOWERS TURNED UP TO CHEER THEIR DELEGATES, BUT THEY WERE NEVERTHELESS ABLE TO PROVIDED A WILDLY JUBILANT WELCOME.

KADU LEADER RONALD NGALA MADE ONLY A SHORT STOPOVER IN THE CAPITAL BEFORE FLYING TO MOMBASA, ON THE COAST, TO ADDRESS A MEETING. THE MOST COLOURFUL FIGURE AMONG THE KADU DELEGATES WAS WILLIAM MURGOR, WHO DANCED HIS WAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT ACROSS THE YARMAC UNTIL HIS SUPPORTERS CARRIED HIM OF SHOULDER HIGH. BEFORE THE LONDON CONFERENCE, MR. MURGOR HAD WARNED HIS SUPPORTERS THAT THEY MAY HAVE TO "SHARPEN THEIR SPEARS" TO GET THE FEDERAL CONSTITUTION THEY WANTED. THE SHOWED NO SIGNS OF VIOLENCE NOW AS HE INFORMED HIS SUPPORTERS THAT KADU HAD GOT WHAT THEY ASKED FOR UNDER THE COMPROMISE SOLUTION.

LATER, WHEN THE KANU DELEGATION HEADED BY JOMO KENYATTA ARRIVED, THEY DENIED THAT KENYA WOULD HAVE A REGIONAL, OR FEDERAL SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. MR. KENYATTA POINTED OUT THAT THE MAUDLING CONSTITUTION PROVIDED FOR A STRONG CENTRAL EXECUTIVE WITH CONTROL OF THE KEY POSTS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, TRADE, FINANCE AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT.

NEXT STAGE IN THE KENYAN MARCH TO INDEPENDENCE IS THE FORMATION OF THE COALITION AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN UPPER HOUSE TO BE ELECTED FROM THE REGIONS AS REQUESTED BY KADU. BOTH SIDES HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY INTEND TO PRESS FOR A DEFINITE DAT FOR INDEPENDENCE.
