  • Description

Cameramen have just been given a preview of the new Mercedes 350-SL sports car due to announced by Mercedes-Benz on Friday (16 April). Though its name recalls the earlier 300 SL, the new car is more a descendent of the 230 SL introduced eight years age and the more recent 280 SL, which it replaces.

It is described as a refined sports car in the modern tradition of grand tourers, rather than na all-out sports car.

There is natural sound on part of this film.

SYNOPSIS: A new Mercedes has just joined the ranks of elegant sports cars from the famous West German makers. The new model, called the 350 SL,is descended from the current 280 SL, which it supersedes. The 3.5 litre V-8 engine is at the front and delivers 200 brake horse-power.

A rubber strip protects the doors from careless opening, and the optional metal coupe roof is easily detached.

The emphasis is on safety in the two-seater cockpit. The dashboard has no protruding parts and is designed to absorb shocks in a crash. The boot holds plenty of luggage and the doors operate without a release button.

Halogen lamps and wrap-round flashers help the driver see and be seen, while the safety break-away mirror is adjustable from inside the car.

The makers describe their car as a refined sports car in the modern tradition of grand tourers, a safe and comfortable car in which great distances can be covered swiftly and without fatigue. With a top speed of 130 miles (210 Kms) per hour it is certainly swift.
