    THE FRENCH NAVY'S DEEP SEA BATHYSCAPE ARCHIMEDE WILL CONDUCT SURVEYS FROM MAY TO AUGUST ALONG JAPAN'S PACIFIC COAST. THE UNDERWATER CRAFT WAS UNLOADED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) IN YOKOHAMA HARBOUR, THE MAIN PORT FOR TOKYO.

    THE ARCHIMEDE HOLDS THE WORLD'S DEEP SEA DIVING RECORD OF 9,545 METRES (32,000 FEET).

    IT WAS BROUGHT TO JAPAN ABOARD THE FREIGHTER YAMAGUCHI MARU AND WAS UNLOADED UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF TWO FRENCH NAVAL OFFICERS.

    THE VESSEL WILL UNDERTAKE GEOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SURVEYS ALONG THE OCEAN FLOOR NEAR THE JAPANESE COAST. ITS OPERATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO LOCAL DISCOVERIES IN MARINE RESEARCH AND OCEANOLOGY.
