    JUST TWO YEARS AGO PAKISTAN WENT TO WAR WITH HER MASSIVE NEIGHBOUR INDIA. THE WAR ENDED QUICKLY IN A NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT. ON FRIDAY (8 SEPTEMBER '67) THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE SEPTEMBER WAR WAS MARKED IN DACCA, CAPITAL OF EAST PAKISTAN, BY PARADES AND PUBLIC CELEBRATIONS.

    THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE CELEBRATIONS WAS THE PARADE AT THE DACCA STADIUM WHERE THE GOVERNOR, MR ABDUL MONEM KHAN INAUGURATED THE MILITARY TATTOO, PRAISED "OUR VALIANT SOLDIERS, SAILORS AND AIRMEN" AND SAID THAT THE CITIZENS OF EAST PAKISTAN WERE LIVING AS CITIZENS OF A SOVEREIGN STATE "BECAUSE OF THE SACRIFICE OF THE BRAVE SOLDIERS."
    OVER 50,000 PEOPLE SAW THE PROCESSION IN DACCA TO CELEBRATE DEFENCE DAY, WHICH FEATURED THE MODERN WEAPONS OF THE PAKISTAN ARMY, INTERSPERSED WITH ANCIENT WEAPONS AND METHODS OF TRANSPORT -- NOTABLY THE ELEPHANT.

    IN THE EAST PAKISTAN CAPITAL, A PUBLIC HOLIDAY WAS DECLARED FOR THE OCCASION, WHICH WAS MADE FESTIVE BY PARADES OF MUSICIANS AND DANCERS WHICH PRECEDED THE MILITARY DISPLAY.
