Background: Almost the entire population of 35,000 turned out at Chuquicamata on Sunday (14 November) to give Cuban Premier Fidel Castro the most enthusiastic welcome of his five-day visit to Chile.

Work at the world's largest open-pit copper mining operations ground to a halt as the Premier's party appeared at this Andean town's main square.

Dr. Castro was later to inspect the mine, which, nationalised last month by Marxist President Salvador Allende's Government, is Chile's biggest single money-earner.

The Cuban leader will reportedly stay in Chile for at least another week.

SYNOPSIS: At Chuquicamata, Chile, on Sunday, an enthusiastic welcome for Cuban Premier Fidel Castro. Almost the entire 35,000 people of this Andean copper mining town turned out to greet him. The Cuban leader on the fifth day of his visit to Chile, had come to visit what is the world's largest open-pit copper mine.

Premier Castro's arrival coincided with pay awards dispute between 4,000 mineworkers here and President Salvador Allende's Government. The mine, nationalised last month, is the country's biggest single money-earner. During his tour, Dr. Castro has reportedly been moderate in his declarations in what has been seen as an attempt to assist President Allende's distinct road to socialism.
