  • Description

WHILE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT MINISTERS VISITED THE INSTALLATIONS ON THE UPPER NILE DAMAGED IN LAST WEEK'S ISRAELI ATTACK, STUDENTS IN CAIRO STAGED A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE BALFOUR DECLARATION. YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WAS THE 51ST. ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION BY WHICH BRITAIN PLEDGED TO HELP SET UP A NATIONAL HOME FOR THE JEWS IN PALESTINE.

GOVERNMENT MINISTERS VISITING THE DAMAGED AREA INCLUDED THE MINISTER OF IRRIGATION. SOME OF THE WORST DAMAGE WAS TO A NEW TWO MILLION POUND BRIDGE ACROSS THE NILE ABOUT 20 MILES (32 KMS.) SOUTH EAST OF NAGH HAMADI WHICH IS THE TOWN AT THE CENTRE OF THE SUGAR GROWING AREA NEAR LUXOR. A HOLE 10 FT. (3 METRES) ACROSS WAS BLASTED IN THE GIRDERS OF THE 16,00-YARD (1 KM.) BRIDGE.

EGYPTIAN WORKMEN AND WEST GERMAN ENGINEERS WERE ALREADY AT WORK REPAIRING THE BRIDGE WHEN THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES CAME TO INSPECT IT. THE ATTACK ON THE BRIDGE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED ONE ON NAGH HAMADI AND NEARBY POWER INSTALLATIONS. THE ISRAELI SAY IT WAS THE WORK OF A COMMANDO UNIT, ALTHOUGH EGYPTIAN SOURCES MAINTAIN THE DAMAGE IS THE RESULT OF AERIAL ATTACK.

IN CAIRO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS TO LAY WREATHS ON THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER'S MONUMENT - PART OF THEIR PROTEST AGAINST THE BALFOUR DECLARATION. THEY CARRIED PLACARDS READING "YOUTH BLOOD IS THE WAYS TO VICTORY" AND "JERUSALEM IS OUR HOME". THE PROTEST ENDED WITH A COMMEMORATIVE GATHERING IN CAIRO UNIVERSITY'S MAIN AUDITORIUM.
