East German ski jumper, J. Danneburg, was the surprise winner of the German-Austrian ski jumping tournament held at Bischof Shofen, near Salzburg, in Austria on Tuesday (6 January).
The four-round tournament was seen as a warm-up for next month's Winter Olympics to be held in Innsbruck.
After the first two rounds held in Obersdorf and Garmisch in Germany, and the third round in Innsbruck, Austria, the East German jumper was leading on points from his Austrian rivals.
However, experts predicted that the Austrian jumpers Schnabl and Bachler would feel more at home at Bischofshofen...and that either could carry of the title.
But this proved a fallacy, and the East German -- virtually an unknown at the start of the tournament -- turned in yet another beautiful jump to give him an overall point score lead of 920.2 points.
Schnabl was second on 910.9 points and Bachler on 901.9.
