  • Description

PRESIDENT NYERERE OF TANZANIA, WHO ON WEDNESDAY WALKED OUT OF A DEBATE DURING THE MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY, SAID IN ADDIS ABABA ON WEDNESDAY THAT HE WAS NOT PESSIMISTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE ORGANISATION.

PRESIDENT NYERERE WALKED FROM THE CONFERENCE WHEN THE BUDGET FOR THE 'LIBERATION COMMITTEE', BASED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, WAS REJECTED. THE TANZANIAN LEADER THREATENED TO ORDER THE COMMITTEE FROM TANZANIA IF THE O.A.U. DID NOT PROVIDE FUNDS FOR IT.

THE PRESIDENT SAID HE DID NOT BELIEVE THE O.A.U. WAS DISINTEGRATING. HE BELIEVED IT HAD SUFFERED, BUT SAID IT HAD TAKEN A STEP BACKWARDS TO ADVANCE TWO STEP FORWARD.

QUESTIONED ABOUT THE RHODESIA SITUATION, PRESIDENT NYERERE SAID THAT MR. SMITH MIGHT HAVE CAUSE FOR SATISFACTION AT THE MOMENT, BUT THERE WOULD BE MORE REALISTIC AND MORE EFFECTIVE MEASURES BROUGHT AGAINST THE REBEL REGIME IN THE FUTURE.

THE FOURTH MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY IN ADDIS ABABA HAS ENDED. PRESIDENT NYERERE OF TANZANIA, WHO HAD AT ONE STAGE LEFT THE CONFERENCE, WAS INTERVIEWED ABOUT THE STATE OF THE O.A.U.
