  • Description

Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus arrived in the Greek capital, Athens, on Friday (29 November) for talks with the Greek Government before his return to Cyprus next week.

President Makarios was forced to leave Cyprus last july after a coup engineered by the Greek-officered Cyprus National Guard. He has spent the last four months in the United States and Britain.

The Archbishop was greeted at Athens airport by Greek Premier Constantine Karamanlis and United-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Ioannis Varvitsiotis. His talks with the Greek Government will also be attended by Cypriot Acting-President Glafkos Clerides.

The aim of the discussions is to find a common Greek and Greek-Cypriot stance for the talks Mr. Clerides has been holding with Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash since the collapse of the Geneva peace conference on Cyprus.

Settlement of the Cyprus problem may be complicated by the Archbishop's return to the island. Turkish Cypriot leaders have expressed little confidence in his ability to ease the situation. Fears are also growing that the Archbishop's return may spark off violence between supporters of his policy of Cypriot independence and supporters of Enosis ... union with Greece.
