Background: West Ham United have appointed Trevor Brooking as
caretaker manager for the last three games of the season,
the premier league club said on Thursday.

One of the club's all-time great players and a member
of the club's board, the former England midfielder will
take over from Glenn Roeder, who remains stable in hospital
after suffering a mini-stroke on Monday.

Brooking, 54, has three games -- away to Manchester City,
home to Chelsea and away to Birmingham City -- to save the
club from relegation. They are currently four points adrift of
    Bolton Wanderers and safety.

"This seems to be the most sensible solution to preserve
the continuity that Glenn and his back-room team have put into
place," Brooking told the club's website.

"We aim to keep the momentum going that everyone has
achieved over the last eight matches when 15 points have been
    gained."
The rest of the coaching staff will stay in their current
    positions.

Brooking joined West Ham as an apprentice in 1965 and
played more than 600 games before retiring in 1984.

He helped them to win the FA Cup twice, heading the only
goal of the game for the then-second division club to win the
    1980 final against Arsenal.

Since retirement Brooking has worked as a television
analyst and recently stood down as chairman of administrative
    body Sport England.

He has been awarded the MBE and CBE for his services to
    the game.
