  • Description

THE EGYPTIAN MILITARY BUILD-UP ALONG THE SUEZ CANAL IS CONTINUING -- AND INCREASING SPECULATION THAT THE EGYPTIANS MAY BE PREPARING TO FREE THE CANAL IN THE FACE OF ISRAELI OCCUPATION OF THE EAST BANK. A DELEGATION OF BRITISH PARLIAMENTARIANS WHICH HAS BEEN VISITING CAIRO WENT TO THE CANAL YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) TO GO ABOARD ONE OF THE BRITISH SHIPS WHICH HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN THE CANAL SINCE THE ARAB-ISRAELI WAR IN JUNE LAST YEAR.

DURING THE "SIX DAY WAR" IN JUNE, ISRAELI FORCES DROVE ALL THE WAY TO THE EAST BANK OF THE CANAL AND TOOK UP POSITIONS THERE WHICH THEY STILL HOLD. SINCE THEN, THE TWO SIDES HAVE INTERMITTENTLY SHELLED EACH OTHER ACROSS THE CANAL. RECENTLY THE EGYPTIANS HAVE BEEN BUILDING UP THEIR FORCES ON THE WEST BANK AND EVACUATING THE CIVILIAN POPULATION OF SUEZ TO AVOID FURTHER CASUALTIES FROM ISRAELI SHELLING.

THE ISRAELIS HAVE SO FAR OPPOSED THE CLEARING OF THE NORTHERN END OF THE CANAL, BECAUSE OF THE EGYPTIAN REFUSAL TO ALLOW ISRAELI SHIPS USING IT. HOWEVER, THE ISRAELIS SAY THEY ARE PREPARED FOR THE SOUTHERN END TO BE CLEARED SUFFICIENTLY FOR THE BRITISH AND OTHER FOREIGN SHIPS TRAPPED THERE TO SAIL INTO THE RED SEA. HOWEVER, AS NO AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES HAS BEEN REACHED -- THE SHIPS REMAIN TRAPPED.
