  • Description

The recent Independence celebrations in Kenya were highlighted in Nairobi by a National Dress competition full of exciting and colourful ideas.

Miss Grace Wood of Nakuru was overall winner of the ladies section in a polka-dot Dutch-printed dress, with satin sleeves, and a matching stole and hat.

There was also a strong men's section in the competition, organised by the Ministry of Co-operatives and Social Services at the Nairobi City Stadium.

Men and women alike in Kenya are unafraid of riotous colour in the clothes they wear. They borrowed ideas from European clothes in the competition, but for the most part made use of ideas from traditional costume.

Among those watching the parade were the Minister of Social and Co-operative Services Mr. Masinde Muliro, Kenya's Chief Justice Mr. Kitili Mwendwa, and General Ndolo, Commander of the Kenyan army.
