Japan's Kazuko Sawamatsu defeated Ann Kiyomura of the United States, and Mexico's Raul Ramirez upset Manuel Orantes of Spain to win the women's and men's singles titles at the Japan Open Tennis Tournament in Tokyo on Sunday (9 November).

Sawamatsu defeated Kiyomura 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and took home 4,000 U.S. dollars (2,000 pounds sterling) as first price.

The two women teamed up to win the women's doubles title.

In men's singles, Ramirez surprised fans by upsetting the U.S. Open champion Orantes with his aggressive net play. Seeded fifth, Ramirez defeated his top seeded rival 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in 1 hour 49 minutes.

For his efforts, he took home 20,000 U.S. dollars (10,000 pounds sterling). Orantes won half that much.

For Orantes it was a difficult match. He failed to match his almost perfect performance against Australia's Tony Roche in the semi-finals on Saturday and his play was erratic. He also had difficulty with his first service.

Ramirez teamed with Brian Gottfried of the U.S. to win the men's doubles finals.
