  • Description

West Berliners bid a nostalgic farewell today (Monday) to the city's last tram. The first horse-drawn street cars plied the streets of the Berlin back in 1865, and Berliners didn't let the passing of the tram-age go by without celebration.

Yesterday (Sunday) the Berlin Transport Authority held a sale of tram souvenirs. Anything from a uniform button to an entire tram wagon could be bought - the latter for about GBP50.

Souvenir hunters rushed for the relics of the tram age. The scramble for souvenirs amid the ringing of bells and snapping of ticket-punchers was a keen that a policeman in a 60 year-old costume was on hand to keep things in order.

Decorated with flowers and escorted by hundreds, the last tram seen off the track from Spandau to the Charlottenburg district.

All public traffic is now to be carried by bus and underground.
