Background: THE BRITISH MINISTER OF DEFENCE, MR.HAROLD WATKINSON - ON A FORTNIGHT'S TOUR OF THE MIDDLE AND FAR EAST - INAUGURATED A NEW GBP5 MILLION COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE AT THE BRITISH CROWN COLONY OF ADEN, ON MARCH 29TH.

MR.WATKINSON'S THREE-DAY VISIT COINCIDED WITH A LOCAL ARMED FORCES WEEK BEING CELEBRATED AT THE LARGE BRITISH MILITARY BASE. SHORTLY AFTER HIS ARRIVAL HE WAS WATCHING MEMBERS OF THE 45TH COMMANDO ROYAL MARINES IN TRAINING ON THE RUGGED, SUNBURNT CLIFFS AROUND THE BASE.

LATER HE THREW A SWITCH TO FORMALLY OPEN THE COMMUNICATION CENTRE. IT INCLUDES A TRANSMITTING STATION THAT HAS BEEN BUILT WITH MORE THAN 100 AERIAL MASTS OVER AN AREA OF ONE SQUARE MILE. MESSAGES ARE ALREADY PASSING THROUGH AT THE RATE OF 5,000 A DAY. THE CENTRE FORMS PART OF THE PROCESS OF INTEGRATING THE THREE BRITISH ARMED SERVICES IN THE FIELD OF COMMUNICATIONS.

ADEN, SITUATED ON THE SOUTHERN COAST OF ARABIA, HAS BEEN A BRITISH BASE SINCE 1839, AND DURING RECENT YEARS HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY MORE STRATEGIC. AS THE OPENING OF NEW COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE INDICATES, IT IS THE FIRST BASE IN WHICH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S NEW SYSTEM OF UNIFIED COMMANDS FOR THE ARMED SERVICES HAS BEEN INTRODUCED.
