    THE PRESIDENT PULLED INTO TOWN EARLY IN THE DAY AND WAS CHEERED BY THOUSANDS AS HIS MOTORCADE WOUND THROUGH NEW YORK CITY TO THE TIP OF LOWER MANHATTAN, KNOWN AS THE BATTERY.

    THERE, A HUGE BRONZE EAGLE WITH SPREAD WINGS STANDS ATOP A PEDESTRAL.THE MEMORIAL HONOURS THE 4,596 AMERICAN SERVICEMEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE WESTERN ATLANTIC OCEAN DURING WORLD WAR TWO.

    THE DEDICATION DONE, MR.KENNEDY WENT ON HIS WAY TO THE FUND-RAISING PARTY FOR THE PRESIDENT'S DEMOCRATIC PARTY AT THE WALDORF-ASTORIA HOTEL.ON HIS WAY, HE STOPPED OFF AT HIS HOTEL, THE CARLYLE, TO FRESHEN UP, AND WAS GREETED BY FANS AND PICKETS PROTESTING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN THE SOUTH.THEY BORE SIGNS DEMANDING STRONGER PRESIDENTIAL ACTION TO END SUCH DISCRIMINATION AGAINST NEGROES.
