    Background: The University of Dahomey at Cotonou conferred its first doctorate on December 21. Dr. Jacques Setondji, a native-born Dahomean, was awarded his doctorate for a thesis on bio-chemistry. A professorial panel examined Dr. Setondji's thesis and afterward he was made a Doctor of Science with honours.

    The panel included the reactor of the University of Dahomey, M. Edouard Adjanohoun; M. Pavis, a lecturer and professor at the University; Professor G. Dirheimer, Honorary Dead of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Strasbourg's in France; and Professor J.P. Ebel, a professor at Strasbourg's Faculty of Science.

    Dahomey has a highly developed education system and until independence had provided trained manpower throughout French-speaking Africa.

    SYNOPSIS: The University of Dahomey at Cotonou has conferred its first doctorate. A university panel, consisting of the Rector and three professors, awarded the doctorate to Jacques Setondji, a native-born Dahomean who wrote his thesis on biochemistry. He was awarded a Doctorate of Science with honours. Dr. Setondji's achievement is the high point so far of Dahomey's advanced education system which is well known throughout French-speaking Africa.

    The degree was conferred on Dr. Setondji after he presented his thesis to staff and students at the University. The four-man committee which examined the new doctor's work in biochemistry was headed by the Dean of Dahomey University, M. Edoward Adjanohoun. The other members were: Professor Pavis, a lecturer; Professor Dirheimer, Honorary Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Strasbourg in France; and Professor J.P. Ebel, Professor of Science at Strasbourg.
