  • Description

Several hundred people demonstrated in London on Saturday (22 Jan) against Britain joining the European Economic Community.

The demonstration was held outside Kensington Gardens - site of most embassies in the British capital - and coincided with the signing of the Brussels Treaty.

A deputation from the demonstrators delivered a letter to the EEC Commission's representative in London.

SYNOPSIS: Notable among the demonstrators - member of Parliament, Peter Shew, union leader Clive Jenkins - and former minister Douglas Jay.

Kensington Palace Gardens is the location of most embassy buildings in London - and also of the office of the Common Market representative. Outside, demonstrators continued to wave banners and placards - and to chant anti-market slogans.

A small group of Common Market supporters also turned up... But then it was the opponents who were most vociferous.
